A TRIP TO JERSEY SHORE AND PFOUTZ VALLEY

LACK OF GENEALOGICAL INTEREST FROM PENNSYLVANIA PFOUTS
MAY BE DUE TO MALE LINES ALL HAVING RUN OUT THERE

For several years your Editor has been frustrated by the lack of factual data available on the Pfoutz/Pfouts of Perry County (Pfoutz valley) and Lycoming County (Jersey Shore), both in Pennsylvania. Concerned are questions concerning identification and definitions of descendants of John Pfoutz, youngest son of Hans Michael Pfautz, Sr., both father and son immigrating to America in 1727. John Eby Pfautz in his Pfautz book (1881), you'll recall, misidentified this family as being baronial, and we facetiously from time-to-time have referred to John as "Baron John."
Early this month (June 1987) we had the opportunity to mitigate this frustration. Having been elected President of the Utah Society, Sons of the American Revolution, we found ourselves attending the National Congress, SAR, at Valley Forge and having a few extra days before moving on into Ohio on business. We, therefore made our first visit to Pfoutz Valley and the Courthouse at New Bloomfield, Perry Co. and to Jersey Shore and the courthouse in Williansport, Lycoming Co., Pa.
We did not find all the answers, but we located a number of missing Pfouts --- and ran down several of missing links. We also broke off two fingernails digging sod off of almost buried tombstones in the Old Jersey Shore cemetery, and we got soaked in a downpour while trying to read stones in the Old Cemetery at Millerstown in Perry County. In the last instance, we had to give up the search, for we had run out of time and the rain had set in for all-day. We stopped reading tombstones in downpours and blizzards about fifteen years ago.
Specifically, we were interested in getting a better identification on John Pfoutz's eldest son Leonard (also John, Jr., and John Leonard in the records) in Lycoming County, and in trying to make some sense out of the six children and large legacy left by John's youngest son David when he died in 1823. Both the children and the legacy seemingly disappeared in Perry County.

Several family quests had been made for both of these families in the past, but nothing definitive has ever been published or archived. The LDS Library in Salt Lake City has virtually nothing on Lycoming County and little beyond 1860 for Perry County.

From the condition of the Pfouts tombstones in the old section of the Jersey Shore cemetery, we sincerely doubt that a family member has been around to trim around the stones for fifty or more years. The last close relative, John Pfouts Stevens- died in 1940, He was a great-great grandson of "Baron" John.

We resorted to the on-site tombstone reading only after searches of the genealogy sections at the Williamsport Public-Library and the Lycoming County Historical Society established that the Jersey Shore Cemetery had not been done by other tombstone readers --- which was passing strange, considering that Jersey Shore was across the Susquehannah from Fort Antes, which dated back to the French and Indian War and the area abounded in Revolutionary War veteran graves. The DAR, seemingly, had picked out the veterans, but the rest were unrecorded.

When we saw the cemetery, we could understand why it has not been done --- it is a very large burying ground, covering many acres and still much in use today on the north end.

All of the following are in the old section at the south end, are all in the east half, beginning about half way up the hill and to the crown. Whether these have been published before, we know not, but they are published now.

To help you sort out the folk in Jersey Shore, here's the latest concept of the family of John Leonard Pfoutz, eldest son of "Baron" John, and his wife Mary Ann Crane:

JOHN LEONARD PFOUTZ., b. 20 Nov 1742, Strasburg Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa., m. MARY ANN CRANE, 20 Mar 1773, Lancaster, Pa., d. 10 Jun 1813, Jersey Shore, Lycorning Co., Pa. Both are buried in Pine Creek Cemetery, Porter Twp., Lycoming Co., Pa. Children:

Michael Q. Crane married a sister of Leonard's wife after the death of Ann. He, too,
moved to Henderson Co., Illinois, taking his children by Ann.
The PFOUTS that concern us at the moment are the three surviving sons of John Leonard, namely Leonard, John D., and Jacob W.
Here is latest concept of the family of Leonard, who was an Innkeeper in Jersey Shore, then in Wellsboro, Tioga Co., Pa., and lastly a farmer in Point Twp., Northumberland Co., Pa.

LEONARD PFOUTZ, b. 18 Jan 1772, Pfoutz Valley, Pa.; m. 24 Feb 1803, Pine Creek Twp., Lycoming Co., Pa., Nancy Covenhoven, dgtr of Robert Covenhoven and Mercy Kelsey Cutter; d. 1847, Northumberland Co., Pa. Children:

12.CHRISTIANAPFOUTZ, b. c1825, unmarried; d. 1834. Wellsboro, Tioga Co., Pa.

This conception differs considerably from identifications found elsewhere. However, a careful analysis of Lycoming Co., Pa., records, both public and ministerial, as well as several county histories indicates that the above description is the most agreeable to Census definitions found in 1800, 1810, and 1820.

JOHN D. PFOUTS, b. 31 Mar 1782, Pfoutz Valley, Pa., m. 10 Jan 1815, Sarah Richards; d. 10 Feb 1857, Porter Twp. (abounding Jersey Shore), Lycoming Co., Pa. Children:

On June 30, 1882, Fleming M. PFOUTS and George J. F. Ram advised the Orphans Court of Lycoming Co., Pa., that the heirs of Jacob W. Pfouts were:
Dr. George 1. Pfouts, of Jersey Shore, Pa.
Dr. John S. Pfouts, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Mrs. Hannah Bacon, of Jersey Shore, Pa.
Mrs. Anna Allen, of Chester, Pa.
Fleming M. Pfouts, of 2101 Sumer St., Philadelphia, Pa.
Jacob B. Pfouts, of St. Louis, Mo.
Margaret M. Pfouts, of Jersey Shore, Pa.
Frank Pfouts, of Mt. Carmel, Pa., a minor.
Elsie Hawkins and William Hawkins, by their guardian, Dr. George I. Pfouts
John F. Ramm, Jacob Pfouts Ramm, Harry O. Ramm, Theodore W. Ram, and Samuel C. Ramm, minor children of Frances Pfouts, intermarried with George J. F. Ramm, by guardian Samuel Christ, of Lock Haven, Pa.

Where all of these fit is still unclear and there are surely some missing pieces. Margaret M. Pfouts was the widow of Benjamin C., heiring her deceased son John G.'s share.

That's enough for the Pennsylvania Pfouts for this Newsletter. We'll do Perry County, Pa., and the six missing children and the missing legacy in the next issue.

SPACE IS TIGHT THIS ISSUE, DESPITE THE EXTRA PAGE, SO IN PASSING.....

Thanks to all who have contributed to the research in Germany, especially to Carolyn Crabtree of North Fort Myers, Florida, who was uncommonly generous. A private report will go to the contributors and then shared in a later issue of the Newsletter. We have our first report from the Genealogist, essentially "progress," but we'll be communicating the specifics.

Thanks to Daniel R. Pfoutz of Gibsonia, Pa., we now have a copy of the will of Jacob Pfautz of East Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pa., in which one of John Eby Pfautz's missing families is identified. We will feature this in the next issue of the Newsletter, but anyone who wants a copy before then, say so by letter or phone.

In our spare time, we have been working on a definition of the descendants of Michael Pfouts, immigrant of 1787, which is largely Eastern Ohio. We have also made considerable progress in sorting out the Fouts in Miami, Cass, Carrol1, and Wabash counties, Indiana. Anyone interested, write.

FINALLY, WE GET AROUND TO ANOTHER WAR

FEWER FAMILY MEMBERS SERVED IN THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
AND THE PHILLIPINE INSURRECTION, BUT THEY WERE AN INTERESTING LOT

For more than a year now we have been threatening to publish the Foutz, etc. records that we have from the National Archives concerning service in the Spanish-American War. Along with that War, we picked up the Philippine Insurrection because in the Western Pacific, the United States had more trouble with the Filipinos in 1900-01 than they had had with the Spanish during the Battle of Manila Bay. We have yet to encounter a Pfoutz, etc. who served in Navy or Marines---that did not happen, apparently, until World War I. Those who served here were generally older than those who served in the Civil War.

Because some of these men survived until relatively recently and there are living close kin, we are going to be judicious in what we publish here. Except where a death was seventy or more years ago (the U.S. Government's right-of-privacy limit), we'll confine our data to military records.

[Not enumerated in California in Census of 1900. The California State Death Index indicates that a Ray R. Fouts, age 33, died in Napa Co., California, 20 Feb 1912. Parentage assumably ascertainable from death certificate.]

He died as William F. Fouts on 19 Nov 1958 at the VA Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.]

And that's that --- except for the Census of 1900, Military & Naval Establishments: PHINEAS FOUTZ, Corp., Co. K, 19th U.S. Infantry, Cebu, P.I. (never filed for a pension, records not consolidated as with William F.); THOMAS FOUTZ, Co. A, 17th U.S. Infantry, Luzon, P.I.,(son of the enigmatic David Fouts, of Covington, Ky., who appears to have been a FOUT); and WILLIAM FOUTS, Co. K, 31st U.S. Infantry, Davao, Mindinao, P.I.

We suspect that the Morgan County, Ohio, Fouts and their western extensions again had the most participants in this service, a family tradition going back to their common ancestor Andrew Fouts, Sr., son of Jacob Pfautz, who had Revolutionary Service against the British and the Indians on the Virginia-Ohio frontier.

ALWAYS LOOK FOR YOURSELF

FOUTS PROOF FOUND IN LDS BAPTISM FILE PRESUMED TO HAVE BEEN CULLED LONG AGO

Another case was made for not taking research done by others for granted is a recent finding in the LDS Baptismal File in the Library at Salt Lake City. Considering the number and genealogical activity of the LDS Foutz, we wrongly assumed that all Foutz, etc. had been identified. Wrong!
While waiting to use a microfilm reader a month ago, we idled away the time looking up Foutz, Fouts, Pfoutz, etc. in the various LDS card files on the Main Floor, mostly confirming what we already had in our files, but all of the sudden, we blinked --- for, lo and behold, here was a proof, plus a corroboration of a family story, that folks in Washington State and Nebraska had been looking for, namely: identification of PETER FOUTS, in Huntington Co., Indiana, in 1850; in Nebraska in 1860; in Utah in 1870 and 1880; and apparently back in Nebraska in 1900.

Here’s what the file card -said :

PETER FOUTS, born 31 Dec 1817, Montgomery Co., Ohio, son of Joseph FOUTS and Jane SEARS, baptized 12 July 1863 by Thomas Davenport, ordained 22 Feb 1865 by H. Thornton.

We had presumed that Peter was the son of Joseph Fouts and Jane Smith (per marriage record in Montgomery Co., Ohio, dtd 28 Aug 1811). Sears is intriguing because there were Sears associated with the North Carolina Fouts, and Montgomery Co., Ohio, is where the North Carolina and Pennsylvania Pfouts/Fouts intermingled. most being associated with the Dunkers (Church of the Brethren). The Sears, however, were predominately Kentucky and Indiana. Was it a Jane Sears, Widow Smith, that Joseph married?
But we are documented on another FOUTS, and we continue to reduce the unknowns.

Pfautz-Fouts-Foutz Newsletter

is published more or less quarterly by Dean R. Foutz, 1600 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 1130, Honolulu, Hawaii 96814, and is written and edited by Dr. John Scott Davenport, 48 West Broadway, Suits 1101N, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101. Dean Foutz is a descendant of Conrad Foutz, immigrant of 1753. Davenport is a descendant of Jacob Pfautz, immigrant before 1730, who became curious about the North Carolina Fouts in 1969 and has not been able to dodge the various Pfautz, etc. lineages since.
This publication is a non-profit venture in the interest of better definition of the Pfautz-Fouts-Foutz and related surname lineages in America and Germany. Subscription is obtainable by writing Dean Foutz, whose wife Marilyn maintains the substantial circulation list and whose family does the folding, stamping, and mailing.
Contributions to help support the printing and mailing costs are welcome --- and should be sent to Dean Foutz. Items for the Newsletter, quarries, and so forth should be sent to Dr. Davenport.
If you have a missing link or seek identification of your Pfautz-Fouts-Foutz, etc. lineage, Dr. Davenport will be happy to search the files without cost --- other than postage. Always send a self-addressed, stamped envelope when requesting genealogical help from anyone.
Be patient about replies. Dean is general agent for Connect-Mutual Insurance in the State of Hawaii. Dr. Davenport maintains his own consulting firm and travel extensively. Genealogy is a sideline for both --- sometimes has to be put on the back burner.
